Junior Kindergarten through first grade students learned about the plant guild, corn, beans, and squash. These plants are referred to as The Thee Sisters in Native American folklore because they have been planted in the same field for hundred of years. The Three Sisters are beneficial to each other. Corn acts like a trellis by support the beans. Squash's big leaves provide shade keeping the ground moist and preventing weeds from growing. Beans take nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil, providing essential nutrients for squash and corn. Students learned about this special plant guild and enjoyed a salad with beans, corn, and pumpkin seeds dressed with lemon.
